Bison are some of the most iconic creatures in Yellowstone National Park, as well as some of the most dangerous. On Wednesday morning, July 22, a 55 year-old man from Norco, Cal. found that out the hard way after being gored by a bison in the Bridge Bay Campground area.

The man, whose name was not released by National Park Service officials, was taking pictures of a bull bison wandering around the campground at 11:30 a.m. The man got within two feet of the bison before it charged. The visitor received a puncture wound in the upper left thigh and was treated in the Lake Clinic before being transported via ambulance to St. John’s Medical Center in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. His injuries are not life threatening.

This is the second incident of a visitor being gored by a bison this summer. On June 24, a 50-year-old woman from Spain was tossed into the air by a bison in Canyon. She only received minor injuries. Park regulations say that visitors must stay 25 yards away from bison, and that any violation of that regulation will result in a citation and fine, as well as endangerment to the visitor’s safety.
