The last remaining member of Yellowstone's infamous Druid Pack is no more, as the two-year-old female was killed by a Butte-area stockman defending his cattle against her attacks.

The female, the last member of the pack to wear a collar, was killed on a ranch on the west side of the Highland Mountains, some 150 miles from Yellowstone National Park.

The Druid Pack at one time was the most famous wolfpack in Yellowstone National Park. Threemonths ago the Druid Pack, based in the northwestern corner of Yellowstone National Park, numbered 11 wolves. But after the death of the alpha female, an outbreak of mange that killed seven more females and some deadly attacks from other packs, the Druid Pack was down to a single female.

At its peak the Druid Pack numbered some 37 wolves and was seen as a vibrant symbol of the worthiness of reintroducing wolves to Yellowstone National Park. But that number had dwindled in recent years, and by 200 the pack was down to four adults.
