It's a free-admission weekend at Yellowstone National Park, as the National Park Service is opening the gates to America's National Parks on June 5-6 as part of a national initiative instituted by Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar. 

The purpose is to encourage individuals and families to take affordable, nature-oriented vacations in America’s beautiful national parks.

In addition, National Trails Day on June 5 is an opportune time for taking day hikes or overnight backpacking trips on some of the 1,100 miles (1770 km) of park trails.  Because of wildlife activity, high water, and snow conditions, hikers are urged to contact a visitor center to be advised of local conditions before hiking or backcountry camping. Backcountry camping permits are required.

Fees that are being waived include entrance fees and commercial tour fees. The waiver is good for entrance on Saturday and Sunday, June 5 and 6 only. Visitors entering the park after June 6 will be required to pay the entrance fee. The waiver does not include other fees such as those charged for camping, reservations, tours and use of concessions.

In addition to free entrance this weekend, you will also be able to enjoy the park for free again during the weekend of August 14 and 15.
