A young male grizzly was killed in a hit-and-run accident on Hwy. 191 in the northwest corner of Yellowstone National Park, near the Fawn Pass trailhead. It's the first bear casualty of the year in the Park.

Hwy. 191 runs from West Yellowstone to Bozeman and has higher posted speed limits than found within the rest of the Park. Chances are good the bear dinged up the car in the incident, but there's no effort to find the motorist, who did not report the accident to National Park Service authorities.

Tracks in the area indicated that the young male was not along; tracks from a mature female and another young grizzly were found.

This is the second accident involving bears in Yellowstone since the roads opened for the season. Last week a female was struck in the Hayden Valley by a car near the Mary Mountain trailhead, but the female and her three cubs ran away. The trail was closed when rangers searched in vain for the injured bear.
