Yellowstone Beach Fire

The Yellowstone National Park Beach Fire has been contained to the point where control of the firefighting effort will shift back to the National Park Service tomorrow, with other firefighters removed from the current effort today.

The firefighting is coming to a close, as the Incident Management Team will be handing off management of the fire to the National Park Service at 6 a.m. The two Type 2 IA 20-person crews will also be leaving the area at that time. Meanwhile, two 20-person hotshot crews will remain on the fire to complete mop-up operations by the end of shift today and return to the Fishing Bridge fire camp by tonight.

What's left for the Park Service: to monitor the various pockets of fire within the control areas. The plan was to guide the fire to burned-out areas created by the Arnica Fire last year while setting up control lines to the west and north. That plan succeeded: while the fire is technically only 72 percent contained, we're told fire officials are confident the only fire remaining will burn itself out in coming days, if not sooner if predicted rains are heavier than expected.

The Beach Fire, located in an area of alpine fir about two miles south of Beach Lake and seven miles west-southwest of the Bridge Bay Campground. It was so named because of its proximity to Beach Lake.
