The three bear cubs whose mother tore through Soda Butte Campground just outside Yellowstone National Park earlier this week, killing one and injuring two, will be sent to ZooMontana as soon as possible, destined to live the rest of their lives in captivity. Think of it as life without parole. The decision to let the cubs live ends the tragic incident, which saw the sow and her offspring kill a Grand Rapids, Mich. visitor after dragging from his tent and later injuring two others. The grizzly sow was later captured when she returned to the campground; DNA tests determined that the sow was responsible for the damage; she was put down yesterday.According to officials, the cubs participated enough in the proceedings to prevent their release back into the wild. The logical destination: Billings' ZooMontana, where the cubs could arrive as soon as today. There's still work being done on the incident. An autopsy will be performed on the euthanized sow to see if any physical ailments may have led to the aggressive behavior. And a decision about the future of the campground needs to be made: it remains closed, as do nearby Chief Joseph and Colter campgrounds, The above photo shows the grizzly sow before she was euthanized.
