Pharmacist Brian Matayoshi, killed by a grizzly sow Wednesday, was on his fourth visit to Yellowstone National Park with his wife, Marylyn; they had never seen a bear on previous visits.

The information comes from discussions between the widow and National Park Service officials.

The two were typical Yellowstone visitors: they camped in an RV and drove from their Torrance, Californa home. They were on a day hike when they encountered the grizzly and her cubs on the Wapiti Lake Trail, popular with those going to Artist Point from the Canyon Village area.

The death of Matayoshi is one of those tragedies that probably couldn't be avoided and can't be fixed. The bear did what bears do -- protect their young -- and the Matayoshis did what Park officials and bear experts advise: quietly walking the other way. The one thing the Matayoshis did not have: pepper spray.
